Pet Peeve?

You know those little plastic baggies that reside in the fruit/veggie section of grocery stores? You can tie them in a knot or use the twisty-ties?

Well, I find these baggies completely unnecessary when purchasing fruits/veggies (for the most part - we'll get to that in a minute).

Reasons for not needing them:
Fruits/Veggies contain their own protective layer
You're just going to (hopefully) wash them anyway
The little sticker on the item is easier for the cashier to read, unless they have them all memorized
It's wasteful - the life of a baggie consists of a loop around the grocery store, into yet ANOTHER bag and then thrown out (not recyclable) as soon as you get home.

Even with all those reasons, Ben still insists on using them. I just don't get it and it drives me insane with every single trip to the grocery store.

I do have 2 reasons for possibly accepting the usage:
You have multiple little items that you MUST keep together
The skin on the fruit/veggie can easily be punctured and ruined - but even those flimsy bags can only withstand so much pressure

If this is your case, then I suggest using a canvas bag that can be used and re-used for all your grocery shopping needs.

I concede this point, with the following reservations:

1. The only fruits with sufficiently thick skin to remain unblemished before reaching the kitchen are citrus fruits, mangoes, kiwi, and coconuts. I would give bananas a pass but they bruise too damn easy. Tomatoes, apples, pears, peaches, plums, apricots, are going to get stuck by something and start juicing over everything they touch.

2. The bags might be incredibly thin and probably won't prevent damage, but I am of the opinion that every little bit helps.

3. Three or more fruit of the same kind should be placed into a bag. Organizationally, this is just a necessity. Life is short. I've picked up each piece of fruit individually, inspected it, and placed it into a bag. Now instead of picking up X # of fruit, I pick up 1 bag, leaving a precious ~7 seconds for more important things.

4. Non-plastic/reusable bags do not suck. I would use one if I had one. However, the reusable bags at Wegmans are $1.99 and the plastic bags are free.

5. They are non-recyclable? oops.

Also, I tend to usually use the fruit bags because I hate the thought of how dirty that black conveyor belt is -- even if I wash the fruit. But I always bring my own canvas bags so I don't use any more plastic shopping bags! I guess now I'll make some of these doily bags to solve the fruit bag problem.
