Usually my posts are kinda silly highlights of my life and whatnot... However I want to start posting about my garden. This is something completely new to me - especially going solo.
I have helped my gram in her garden, done various weeding at our house in Exton, a little here a little there with ASP/Good Works, etc.
Last year I really got my hands dirty and became really excited about gardening.
At Lakeside we had our own private courtyard - surrounded by 4 walls, not allowing any animals inside (except for a few chipmunks... still curious as to how they got there). Jamie was the ring leader in that, so she taught me a lot. She and Ricky also showed/taught us how to compost and we created one in our backyard last Spring.
Anyway, after learning a few skills along the way, I went on the Cayuga Wine & Herb Trail and received a potted herb/veggie plant at each winery we went to. I had to take advantage of these awesome plants, so I started a mini garden in our back yard. Great success! We're going again this year and here are some plants to look forward to: Beefsteak Tomato, Big Max Pumpkin, Bouquet Dill, Cilantro, Dark Green Zucchini, Forest Green Parsley, Jalapeno Peppers, Oregano, Red Norlan Potatoes(Seed Potatoes), Purple Peppers, Rosemary, Sage, Summer Thyme, Sweet Italian Basil, Sweet Marjoram, Walla Walla Onions.
This year, I started from scratch. I read through the Farmer's Almanac (online version) and figured out when to plant some seeds. About two weeks ago, I purchased seedlings from our Agway and planted them indoors. Ben also got some more fencing so we can make sure the dogs don't get their paws dirty in my garden.
I am going to blog my progress. There will be pictures. Sorry to those who could care less about gardening. I love it - and I want to share my experiences as an amateur.
3/22 I started seedlings of:
Lavender
Cherry Tomatoes
Heirloom Tomatoes
Broccoli
Jalapeno peppers (per Rich's request from seeds from last year... not thinking they're going to sprout).
Green peppers (also per Rich's request - from an actual green pepper... not so sure about those either).
3/30 Sprouts are sprouting:
Broccoli!!!
3/31 Even more sprouts:
Cherry Tomatoes
Lavender
4/1:
Heirloom Tomatoes
Everyday Ben comes home and I pull him in to the back room saying, "Come, lookie see!!!" I am so excited about my garden.
Today I spent a good part of the sunny morning/afternoon digging and turning over the earth. I hope to get the rest of it done tomorrow and then turn and add the compost over the weekend (hoping it doesn't actually snow).
Until next sprout,
~Gardener Leslie
